Assuming that balefire doesn't work because Drizzt isn't part of the pattern means that we assume each story element is independent of the other and thus the One Power would not be treated as magic giving Drizzt no resistance to it.

I just got here and have no idea where the hell i'm supposed to vote. Been looking around for a while...
I'm a huge Rand fan. From reading the some of the statements above, i assume this is where ppls are voting/predicting/writing? what will happen if the final match.
Rand VS Jaime
Well, Balefires out of the picture, which doesn't really have too big of an impact on the fight because Rand really didn't use Balefire often (only about three times) before he went crazy in gathering storm, and with his character development at the end of the book it is highly unlikely he'd use it anyway. *mutters darkly*
anyway. Who will win? I didn't get too far into George R.R Martins series, but as far as I know Jaime doesn't have any magic/superpower/whatever abilities so I'd have to say. Rand beets him, unless that sword of his counters all magic/one power/whatever then well...
Jamie will win. Rand is a blade master, however he only has one freaken hand! So does Jamie but Rand probably hasn't fully accustomed to it yet, not to mention he has to vomit every time he channels the one power or Ishmale (or however you spell his stupid name) dabbles in the True Power. So there is a chance of that happening.
There is also a chance of Jaime suddenly having a sudden personality make over causing him to have the sudden desire to leap of a cliff, paint his toe nails, or dance in the streets, none of which are very good things to do in the middle of a fight.
Then again, if it does come to fist Rand might break into kickboxing or any other of his Ail/kunfu moves that don't require the use of both his hands.
But i really don't know Jamie enough to know how this Match will turn out.
So. Personally, i'd like Rand to win, because he is pretty much awesomeness in a can. And I like Robert Jordan A LOT more than George Martin.
So...
GO RAND!

But very small amounts of balefire don't hurt much at all. And all of the other attacks Rand could use are just as instantaneous, without any negative results.

Balefire is countered by guerrilla tactics, porting around and blowing up where you think the other person ported to. In the two fights balefire is actually used in in WoT, this is what it comes down to. Rand has no special defense against ranged weapons.
Balefire is just a metaphor for modern weaponry. On the small scale it's like artillery fire, but there are tactics to use against it. (It helps in fantasy where some people can teleport.) On the large scale, you can nuke cities with it but it has terrible moral and environmental consequences.
I hope there's no more balefire in Rand's future cage matches. :P It's really boring if the opponent doesn't have a way of reacting to it, and these ones haven't.

well bob, if you read most of the fights, you would see that the majority of Rand's supporters denounce the Balefire abuse and suggest that there are hundreds of other ways that he could easily have crushed each of the opponents he has faced. Removing balefire doesn't change the outcome, just the manner in which it comes to pass.
