CC Aftermath: Interview with Lauren Kate

kate-tormentComic Con brings in all types.

Especially when it comes to writers.

All genres are expressed at Comic Con. Some authors who attend are epic fantasy writers. Some write urban fantasy. Or young adult. Or steampunk. Or sci-fi. Some, like Tanya Huff, has dabbled in all of them at one point or another. This melting pot of fantasy writers allows a reader to get a solid glimpse of other forays needed to fill out one’s reading resume.

My resume is sorely lacking, it appears. I can’t say that I’ve been interested in reading YA urban fantasy, but Lauren Kate has put the seed in me and it is already germinating. A full-fledged grown plant won’t be far away—just as soon as I get to a bookstore, that is. She joined me for an interview at the Suvudu booth to discuss her novel Fallen and its soon-to-be-published sequel, Torment. As far as writers go, Lauren seems to be right up my alley, someone who enjoys taking single or only a few lines from the Bible and twisting them for the benefit of invoking thought in readers.

She writes about angels, you see, those that have fallen to Earth, those who fall in love with Earthly women. And the ramifications of such unions…

Despite my best efforts, the interview starts off a little slow—and a wee bit shaky. That’s because we lacked a proper tripod to put the camera on. I didn’t think it would be different juggling my notes as well as a camera while talking at the same time, but the combination proved almost too much for me at the beginning.

So I apologize for the shaky cam.

But once we got into the interview, Lauren was a delight. I think many of you who enjoy urban fantasy will like her take on the sub-genre.
