Del Toro to Helm “At The Mountains of Madness”

Del Toro to Helm “At The Mountains of Madness”

Deadline New York is reporting that Guillermo del Toro’s next directorial venture will be a 3-D adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s classic tale of cosmic horror, At the Mountains of Madness.

Rumors of del Toro’s involvement have been floating around for years, but this is the first solid confirmation from the director that he’s really planning to take on the project. Further, reports state that James Cameron is on board as producer, bringing his expertise with the 3-D medium.

At the Mountains of Madness tells the story of an ill-fated expedition into the arctic that uncovers evidence that mankind’s past may lay among the stars.

While I heartily recommend that you read the original story (featured in Random House’s own collection The Road to Madness), you can also download a wonderful free audio adaptation read by Julia Morgan here. She has a lovely British voice which I find suits the tone of Lovecraft (a confirmed Anglophile) quite well.

Thanks for the info.! This is one of my favorite stories by H.P.Lovecraft! I love it! Ranks right up there with The Strange Case of Charles Dexter Ward! I have been dying for someone to make this into a movie! Again Thanks for the update! Can’t wait to see it!

I was thrilled about the free audio download and immediately went for it – but it should be noted that the link above is only to part 1 of 12 parts. A search for the name happily turns up the other parts, so it is no problem, of course. Thanks so much for this!

Um, no, it isn’t. It’s about (spoiler alert):

an ill-fated expedition to the arcitc that discovers the remains of a city inhabited by aliens who colonized earth in the distant past.

    Hi David,
My “uncovers evidence that mankind’s past may lay among the stars” is a reference to the intimation that the aliens in question created life on earth, including humanity. It is an oblique reference, to be sure, and done so to avoid revealing the spoiler that you mentioned.
In any case, I’m glad to meet another HPL fan, and thank you for commenting!
