Zach Snyder has a mediocre directorial track record in my opinion.
He gave us 300, which was a fairly adequate adaptation of Frank Miller’s masterpiece. I know a great many people love it but I wasn’t entirely convinced at its end. Then Snyder gave us Watchmen, which is certainly one of the hardest graphic novels to adapt ever, and he semi-pulled it off. I wasn’t thrilled with it but I enjoyed it more than most people, probably because that graphic novel has always been a study for me and I understand the story’s limitations and strengths.
Now Snyder is about to bring us Sucker Punch.
What can I say about this forthcoming movie? It looks like a great blend of psychology and action. Sucker Punch is the movie Snyder was developing at the time when Watchmen fell into his lap, which means he’s been working on this new movie for a very long time.
Will that help it? Probably. I am by nature a skeptic until I see a movie.
Here is its summary:
Sucker Punch is an epic action fantasy that takes us into the vivid imagination of a young girl whose dream world provides the ultimate escape from her darker reality. Unrestrained by the boundaries of time and place, she is free to go where her mind takes her, but her incredible adventures blur the lines between what’s real and what is imaginary… with potentially tragic consequences.
I am excited at the prospect of this movie making a whole generation of young girls knowing they can kick ass—and take names. I particularly like the casting of Vanessa Hudgens in a role, which should draw in a great many young women into a movie they otherwise would probably have no interest in seeing.

What do you think? Does this look like an opening weekend movie? Full price movie ticket? Or are the visual effects so over the top and so unreal that this will flounder the way of Prince of Persia?
I guess we’ll have to wait and find out.
At least I trust Zach Snyder.
Sucker Punch comes to kick your ass March 25, 2011.
