How we think the fight will go
Vader watches his young opponent. He watches as the young man called Murtagh side-steps one foot over the other, slowly circling him. This boy reminds Vader of himself once—a Jedi Knight determined to bring peace to the galaxy he loved and defended, even if it meant turning to the dark side to do so. Vader thinks of Obi-Wan, his mother, and most of all Padmé. How he loved her so. How he longs for her still.
Vader stands in the middle of the clearing, turning to match Murtagh’s steady circling, the young man’s sword held in front of him, at the ready. Both men studying each other, neither willing to make the first move.
Vader thinks of the similarities between himself and Murtagh at his age. Murtagh’s appearance was not all that different from his. Before all this machinery. Before Obi-Wan betrayed him and left him burning. The anger builds within. The dark side begins to flow into him. Yet the only sound that the tall man in the black armor, helmet, and cape exudes is that of his respirator slowly breathing in and out. The creatures native to this world have run from the area surrounding the clearing. They know something horrible is about to happen.
Vader’s thoughts linger on Obi-Wan, his brother, his friend. How could be have turned on him? How could he have poisoned Padmé’s mind against him? For a flickering moment he takes his mind off of Murtagh and thinks of her, his lost love.
In that second a great shadow appears on the ground in front of Vader. He spins and looks to the sky as a large red dragon with white horns dives directly at him. The great beast opens his mouth and unleashes a torrent of hellfire at Vader.
At the edge of the clearing, Murtagh cracks a crooked grin.
Vader looks up at the fire and doesn’t see the dragon. Instead he sees himself lying next to a lava flow, his legs gone, his flesh and clothing beginning to smolder. Obi-Wan stands over him, safe from the fire. The Jedi reaches down and Vader expects his friend to pull him to safety. But Obi-Wan only picks up Vader’s lightsaber and walks away. Vader sees himself burst into flames. His anger rises and he feels the dark side of the Force awaken within him.
As the great dragon Thorn unleashes his mighty fire upon the Sith Lord, Vader reaches a hand skyward and uses the Force to direct the fire away from him and at Murtagh. The flame veers to the left just feet from Vader’s outstretched hand and envelops the boy in fire.
The surprised dragon closes his mouth and the fire stops. As it continues its descent, it attempts to grab at Vader with its deadly claws. The Dark Lord calls his lightsaber to his still-outstretched hand via the Force and thumbs it on. The scarlet-red blade ignites and slices the underbelly of the massive beast as it soars just feet above Vader’s head.
Thorn cries out as its armor is split open. The dragon crashes to the earth, leaving a large trough in its wake. It thrashes about in agony, using its wings to cover the gaping hole in its abdomen.
Vader turns to examine what he expects will be the charred remains of Murtagh.
To his surprise his opponent is charging through the firestorm unscathed, mouthing some type of incantation. Within seconds he is upon Vader, swinging down at him with his sword and still mouthing words Vader does not recognize. As Vader moves to parry Murtagh’s attack, he is surprised to find himself hurtling through the air. Instead of blocking a sword stroke, he is now reaching out with the Force to keep himself from smashing into a large tree at the edge of the clearing. But for a glancing blow to his right shoulder, Vader mostly avoids the tree. He lands on his feet, cloak splayed out behind him, lightsaber held at the ready.
Vader steps forward only to be met square in the chest by a thunderous blow from the great beast’s tail. His lightsaber flies from his hand and he lands hard on the ground, meters behind where he was hit.
As Vader listens to the sound of his now ragged breathing he sees Padmé one more time. If only she had understood how much he loved her. If only she had listened to him and not Obi-Wan’s lies. It might have all been different. Instead she led Obi-Wan to him. Let Obi-Wan come between them. Let Obi-Wan leave him as this. The anger boils within him once more.
Darth Vader, the Dark Lord of the Sith, rises from the ground, the dark side energies feed off his anger. Using the Force, he grabs a rock the size of his head and hurls it at Murtagh.
Murtagh blocks it easily enough with a magic word, only to find five, ten, twenty stones hurtling through the air towards him. His magical prowess allows him to block most of the debris, but a few get through, catching him in the mouth, chin, and throat. With each hit it becomes harder and harder for him to speak his incantations.
Thorn, still crippled from the horrible wound to his belly, manages to drag himself in front of the rain of stones and shield his rider. Vader stands tall, allowing his hatred for Obi-Wan and Padmé to fill him with dark-side energy. He reaches out with the Force and hoists the massive dragon off the ground. The great beast struggles in vain to break free of the Sith Lord’s hold. Vader raises the beast up, head-first so the remnants of his tail barely brush the ground. The wings are spread wide, and the dragon’s organs push against the gaping hole in its belly.
Vader holds the beast motionless for a moment. He turns to look directly at Murtagh, on his knees, battered and broken. Thorn, in desperation, lets loose one last salvo of hellfire towards the sky. Vader twists his fists, and the great dragon’s neck wrenches and breaks in a cascade of falling flame. Vader flings the dead beast to the side and approaches the boy.
Through the Force, he grasps Murtagh’s neck and lifts him up into the air, holding him so his face is just inches from Vader’s mask.
Vader stares at him, his cold eyes seeing not the man he is fighting but the man he himself once was. The young Jedi Knight, naïve and trustworthy. It’s not Obi-Wan or Padmé that Vader truly hates. Vader hates himself.
He reaches out, catches, and ignites his lightsaber all in one smooth motion. The red blade pierces Murtagh’s chest and escapes through his back. Vader holds Murtagh, watching the life dissipate from his eyes, and he sees himself.
The Force shall free him.

Sorry one more piece of proof he is using Zaroc, it’s villians vs. Murtagh wasn’t revealed a Villian till he had taken Zaroc from Eragon.
It depends. If it was when Murtagh was an outlaw on the run from Galbatorix ithe winner would be vader definately. If it was when Murtagh was a rider of thorn but didnt have zaroc the results would have gone as predicted. If murtagh had zaroc and all that strength he would have beaten vader thumbs down. Anway its unlikely that murtagh and vader would meet in a lonely clearing.Galbatorix would leap on shruikan and would start frantically searching the land if a shifty dude in black armour and carrying a light saber arrived in Alagaesia. Anyway murtagh would be an easy opponent. If it was say Eragon vs vader the fight would be more even.If it was Galbatorix vs vader Galbatorix would have overpowered vader within seconds.Anyway i am a eragon fan so i would vote for murtagh definately even though hes
bound to lose.
Okay, if any of you care to realize that this argument is pointless, this fights ending was voted by people who in fact know the characters.of course it is 1sided. Vader was voted to win. Also, I have read all 3 inheritance books ( can’t wait for book 4) and I reread them atleast 4 times and I have the say murtagh has got nothing on vader and way, vader can simply snap murtaghs neck in half a second, sure murtagh could stop his heart or sever his brain stem with 5 words, but vader’s attack is simply quicker. Also, when you can choked, your mind will wander too much, as stated in the inheritance books, magicians tend not to use mind spells due to mind wandering, therefore, murtaghs a dead man, for all you people saying that galbatorixs would kill him, two words, death star. It’s self explainitory, vader is far too advanced for murtagh. For a fair fight, try picking people of the same time period or something. For all you fanboys of murtagh, please, you must account all of the qualities of both characters, so in fact you are biased aswell. I know both stories inside and out and I have to say the vader wins hands down. So what, a dragon, thorn is as in experianced as a 6 year old with an ak47. also, ever heard of the saber throw? Sure, dragons use magic, but not willingly. And if in any case, if glaedr didn’t kill murtagh and thorn with his magic when they killed murtagh, then thorn isn’t going to do a damn thing but smash him into a tree. Murtagh can’t invade vader’s mind due to vader’s concentration on his past so that’s out. Plain and simple, the contenders are unevenly matched, vader is far too advance for this time period and characters.
Murtagh has not only the power of a super big fire-breathing dragon, he has magic he can do anything with as long as he has enough strength, and he has the strength of three other dragons who are dead, but he can draw on their energy. Plus he almost certainly has energy stored in Zaroc and other things. And lets not forget the home team advantage. And he can just heal himself when he gets hurt. Predicted score: Vader 1, Murtagh 0. What the score would actually be: Murtagh 30, Vader 7.
murtagh should have won, he can kill vader with just one word
I think thorn is a big advantage. he breaths fire. sure, vader can deflect it, but he can do it again. Also, Murtagh can kill with the word, “Wryda”(If you didn’t know, “fate”) and it would kill vader. now, sure, Murtagh might have been out of energy, but what about the trees, birds, and zaroc! maybe even vader! Galbitorix vs vader is more fair. he has more energy and knows more of the ancient language, and vader has the force. but any way, it wasn’t a good prediction.
MURTAGH IS BETTER WITH A BETTER SPECIAL MOVE! THORN SHOULD HAVE SAVED HIM!
but he’s mean. both of them.
but their both like evil
ok……. i thought this was awesome!!!!! cuz i love both eragon, eldest and brisingr and all the star wars books. but to put them together and have a battle??? thats just dumb cuz they both have their weakness and their powers. like murtagh has his sword, magic and the speed of an Elf. but then dark vader has his lightsaber and the force. its pretty good match. but vader would just choke murtagh to death before he could do anything. sorry murtagh im on your side but dark vader would kick your butt, sorry. now if u put murtagh and eragon together!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! id write a big speach about how awesome who ever wrote it is.
oh! and someone please tell christopher Paolini to please hurry up with his new book. im going insane waiting for it!!!!!!!! but i bet if hes talking this long to write it, it better be a good and big book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Murtagh couldn’t have invaded Vader’s mind Here’s why:
Murtagh starts to reach ou toward the mind of his opponent. Vader seems not to notice as Murtagh finds a disciplined, unbreakable barrier. it is different from those of all other magicians he has faced, and though it would be impossible to penetrate, he simply goes around the barrier. Murtagh finds it strange that such a strong barrier should be so easy to go around. (Darth Vader was trained with a totally different type of mind defence/penetration) As Murtagh enters Vader’s mind, he begins to feel disturbed. suddenly, he hears thousands of beings cry out all at once, then a dark force begins to penetrate his own mind. Murtagh violently retreats from this unstoppable force, blockading his own mind and barely getting away with his own conciousness. slowly and painfully, like tar clinging to a boot and slowly dripping off almost taking the boot with it, the force leaves Murtagh to his own thoughts.
He would not try that again if he had any common sense.
here’s how the fight would go down, they would first describe vader like so “it is sith-lukes father-death star owner-jedi-anikan-R2D2 maker-CP30 maker-red glow sword wielder- black caped-burnt face-honkey. but he’d be cut off halfway by a force choke/lightning up butt attack resulting in the planet exploding, because it was shot by the D-star, then it would be all like, thanks for reading book 4. FINALLY ending with somone reading my comment and saying, “that’s ridonculous.”
It was a good story but i agree with Neilandio. Vader had no wards to protect him from any of the 12 words of death.
btw Murtag would have no need to invade Vaders thoughts because he is not a magic user.
it would be a bad idea for murtagh to invade vaders mind anyways, its probably just as twisted as durzas, worse even, and also your all saying stuff like vader could snap his throat instantly if you seee the movies it takes time, and murtagh wouldnt have to be foucused on the magic to do it without talking, anything uncontrolled would kill vader too, not like murtagh cares who he kills
Murtagh would win hands down simply because he could have put up protections against things that unwillingly move his body such as the force, sure it would use a lot of energy but he has 3 dragon hearts of hearts to help him out along with the energy stored in zar’roc and other various magic energy storing items. also, vader’s light saber wouldn’t have cut thorn so easily cuz galbatorix would have placed protections on them both. Also the jedi style of fighting is focused on cutting off limbs and protecting urself from light saber wounds and zar’roc should be able to withstand a light saber blow and while their swords are locked murtagh could just utter some death words.th Not to mention this survey is obviously biased because vader is simply more well known and most people don’t truly understand the mechanics of the magic and the like used in Eragon. Case closed.
Murtagh would win, Darth Vader sucks
Murtagh was flying through the sky on Thorn…. And then Darth Vader came down through the sky at the helm of a star destroyer, and it shot Murtagh down. If that guy who fought Rand in the final and Drizzt can call on help, then Darth should be able to utilize the fact he pretty much has the galaxy under his thumb (or is at least second in charge to the one that does).
In 1v1 Murtagh might win with a death word, but it would have to be the right death word, he would have to try and destroy something that wasn’t being kept going by life support before he was force choked to death. And then if Thorn joined Murtagh DV gets his everpresent support of a massive amount of stormtroopers.
This fight was voted on and writtten by people who have no idea about the Inheritance cycle. First of all, Murtagh would have wards around him and Thorn, blocking Vader’s lightsaber and the Force, which is similar to magic. Second, Murtagh used only one piece of magic in the whole story. It doesn’t take almost a minute to cast a spell as simple as pushing someone back. Third, Murtagh didn’t even use his sword once, which would have blocked the lightsaber due to the fact that it was a Rider’s sword. Fourth, he would have healed Thorn immediately. Fifth, the swipe from Thorn’s tail should have at least destroyed Vader’s life-support. I could go on and on, but I’ll just say one more thing.
Rewrite this.
murtaghs wards would protect him and thorn
he would heal thorn the second he was hurt
wyrda=snapped neck
spell doesnt take an hour to cast
rider swords can stop lightsabbers
this article was obviously written by idiots who never read eragon!!!!!
btw thorns tail would have smashed vaders life support and the fire if only feet away from vader would have burned him anyway plus the force cant lift things as heavy as thorn!!!!!
Guys please. murtagh v vader is not fair at all. Vader has a light saber that can cut five inch steel, the force(witch is not magic), sith training, and a body made mostly of metal. Also if any of you nerds have seen Force Unleashed the main character(a student of vader) moved an entire mile-and-a-half long Star Destroyer. So Yeah Vader 1, Murtagh 0.
And that bull crap about rider swords stopping a light saber. In the book it clearly says that rider swords don’t scratch or pit. It says nothing about them stopping super advanced weapons.
the fight would be 50/50 and yes vader can snap necks instantly he is just evil and likes to torture his victims. Murtagh has never seen a lightsaber so he cant cast a spell to defend against it because he doesn’t know what it is. Murtagh is also over confident in his abilities you can tell by how he talks to eragon in the books. Vader can defend his mind from attacks remember jedi can mess with peoples minds too so im sure he would know if someone was trying to get in to his mind. Vader thinks he is the strongest person in the galaxy so he may underestimate murtagh at first. Also vader would get caught off guard by murtaghs magic. You people call yourselves fans im a major fan of both the inheritance cycle and of star wars in a thousand fights between them both it would almost be dead even. They are both extremely mentally strong and both expert swordsmen.
Honestly everyone should just agree to disagree no one is ever going to change there mind you have to be 100% neutral and if you are truly honest no one is 100% neutral everyone has one they like more then the other.
Honestly everyone should just agree to disagree to judge this you have to be 100% neutral and no one is really 100% neutral. Almost everyone like one or the other better and that isn’t how you judge this you judge it based on statistics. Only a computer is 100% neutral you would have to enter the info into a computer, the computer would tell you the winner like on deadliest warrior.
haha tht was coolZ! but i was rly sad when thorn died even tho he’s an evil dragon and tried to kill Saphira and killed Glaedr
also murtagh should have healed him. i ws expecting him to heal him the whole time i mean all he had to do was go “Waise heil!” and he wouldve been all better.
FOOLS! murtagh could kill vader in an instant, the force can’t lift something like Thorn, the tail whip would have killed vader, the saber through stomach would have killed Thorn, murtagh could have healed Thorn, the heat from the first fire would have killed vader, murtagh could have killed varder with the THOUGTH OF A WORD, and all the other cr@p in the story.
So in the end the guy who wrote this doesn’t know what he’s talking about and murtagh would have one in the first couple seconds while circleing vader (enough time to say ONE word)
murtagh wold win for sure, i have nou douth, vader is powerfull but it’s power (the force) doesn’t stand a chance against the power of the dragon riders bitch !!!!
Don’t worry guys…I have it good authority that the story was fiction. Maybe next time Murtagh can win! Don’t hate on the story writer…it was entertaining.
I am a major Star Wars fan boy. I’ve read about 40 star wars novels. I am now a big fan of the Inheritance series. Just finished Brisingr a couple days ago. And I have to say, when you compare their abilities, Vader would be dead before he even knew he was in a fight. And Murtagh could just leave his sword and his dragon at home.
Honestly… wards, death word, dragon, weis heil, etc murtagh just has to say one word and darth goes to a dirt nap… written very well but lacking true knowledge of inheritance cycle…
I think that thorn would just land on vader and rip his heart out goddamnit
the thing is the dude who rote this onley saw the movie eragon he thinks murtaghs got his original sword so hes a bitch for not doing reaserch
Now then, as a true fan of both series I can say I know both sides quite well. While it is true that Murtagh can use his wards to protect himself from magic, the Force is different. As to the nature of wards, him having these wards would imply his knowledge of the Force in the first place. Especially since he does not know the nature of the Force and how Vader wishes to use it. A lightsaber can cut through a dragon’s hide, as it can cut through some incredibly tough metals. Also, in the matter of mind-magic, for all Murtagh knows, Vader is a magic user. Thus he would default to a dual, as he has no knowledge of what/who Vader is.
*******Stupid Argument Which Is Illogical and Who cares really?***********
Now this is all without knowing how Vader ended up in Alagaesia. If it was the Death Star, if Vader were cut down, there would not be Alagaesia.
********Logic***********
Now Murtagh has a chance in only that if Vader were taken surprise by Thorn.
Personally, I am a great lover of both series and in the end…. How did Vader and Murtagh meet in a clearing? Did Vader skidoo into the book?
Murtagh should have used thystra or one of the twelve words of death to kill Vader in about three seconds.
Well think about it. Murtagh would not even have to say any spell at all. I think that we have all forgotten the first thing an experienced and powerful magician would do,which Murtagh is both of. The first thing he would do is go for the mind. This would be even faster than the Vader neck brake. He would simply take control of Vader. Vader would have no way to block him since he has never have experience in this field. He wouldn’t even have to use magic he could just walk up to him and behead him ,or maybe even let Thorn take it. I think it is fair to say that Murtagh should have all of the items and skills he possessed in the last book that is currently out. Especially considering that Vader wasn’t always as he was in this battle. Well there is my opinion of the matter. No magic needed. Murtagh wins hands down. Not to say that Vader isn’t a formidable opponent, he just wasn’t well enough equipped.
Darth Vader would kill Murtagh instantly.
As a fan of both series, this particular battle would be 55/45 with the slight advantage to Vader. For a few very simple reasons really.
In book one of the Inheritance cycle it is implicitly stated that no magic user would ever use a spell without first breaking into his opponents mind, unless he didn’t care if he also perished. With that in mind, Sith and Jedi both use mental tricks, which means they MUST keep extreme mental discipline in order to be less vulnerable to mind probes, therefor Murtagh would default to using his sword until he could gain access to Vader’s mind, if indeed he could, as Vader is so mentally twisted that his mind very well maybe equivocal to a Shades. So that rules blatant magic use out. Even the twelve words of death wouldn’t really do much against Vader as his suit is stuffed full of the most advanced life support systems you can get, (I mean seriously, look at Greivous from Attack of the Clones).
Sword to Sword: Vader wins this hands down. Lightsaber’s are beams of pure light, inside the containment field generated to give them the “Blade” shape, the temperature would have to be around 10,000 degree’s or so, since lightsaber blades can melt through star ship hulls, and the most advanced metals ever mined, smelted or otherwise created. Vader’s saber would simply sear though Zarroc, thus rendering it useless as a weapon.
Thorn: Thorns fire would hurt Vader, but the he would need to be engulfed in flames for a few seconds, Thorn is still a young dragon technically, even with the advance in his age, thus his fire is not as hot as an Elder dragons would be. With that in mind, Vaders suite would have to be at least somewhat heat-resistant; as it could function as an emergency evac suit. As for the force lifting Thorn; its rediculous to suggest it can’t. “Size matters not” is a point yoda makes with a star ship, a standard T-65 X-Wing starfighter, measuring 16 meters in length packed with missiles, fuel, and more engine than you can shake a stick at, and Yoda lifts it in the air like its a joke. C’mon guys, that thing will easily way several thousand pounds, probably around 5 thousand or so. Further example, Kyp Durron in the extended universe pulls a friggin Frigate sized ship out of a suns gravity well. Thats at least 150-200 thousand pounds of steel.
Thus Vader, assuming he just didn’t blow the damned planet up with a death star, or have it razed to the ground via orbital Star Destroyer bombardment, would have some pretty heavy advantages over Murtagh, but due largely to Murtagh’s hearts, youth, stubbornness and ability to improvise with magic (i.e. use it in ways that do not directly influence Vader) I give Vader only a slight advantage.
Murtagh would have no choice but to assume Vader was a magic user, largely due to the way a lightsaber functions, and would most assuredly assume that once Vader blocked Thorns flame with the force.
I believe in Vader winning this but it can be completely different. Murtagh has the power to cut off vader’s use of the force completely by rendering him paralyzed. The ancient language can do almost anything and even kill vader with a few words or shut down the machines keeping him alive. He also could gain complete control of vader if he would have the knowledge of vader’s real name. Thorn would be an also very overwhelming presence and extra side partner that would make it harder for vader to defend against two very strong opponents. Now if this were to be a staight fight with no cheapness of the magic and dragon and the force i might give it to Vader but murtagh is young and very skilled also but could be overwhelmed yet I still say it would go to murtagh for his youthfullness but I would still make it a true fifty fifty match resulting in the death of both.
Let’s see, several dragons assisting an insanely hot guy V.S. Robo.
