Every Friday, we here @ Del Rey Spectra will place a 50 page excerpt of a selected title on Suvudu. Whether it be science fiction, epic fantasy, alternate history, horror, urban fantasy, paranormal, the possibilities are endless.
Well, only a few hours until we close out 2010 and ring in a new year. With the Del Rey Spectra staff on holiday, we felt it would be best to highlight one of the many legends in this crazy sf/f biz, for a last little education for 2010. He’s been an inspiration to many authors, and his stories are detailed, conflicted, powerful, and just plain good. This person is none other than Michael Moorcock; Nebula award winner, World Fantasy Award winner, member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame and all around writing bad ass.
This week’s excerpt comes from his beloved Elric series: The Stealer Of Souls. Here’s what esteemed Del Rey Spectra editor Betsy Mitchell had to say about the book:
“We were knocked back on our heels with admiration when Del Rey began publishing collector’s omnibus editions of Michael Moorcock’s Elric stories and discovered how many important authors are fans of Moorcock and his iconic antihero. Elric, last emperor of Melniboné, and his soul-sucking sword have had a huge impact on the reading lives of such writers as Neil Gaiman, Michael Chabon, Walter Mosley, Holly Black, Tad Williams, and Alan Moore, all of whom contributed forewords to the six volumes of the Del Rey series. The books contain not just Moorcock’s classic stories, but Melnibonélia including comic book scripts, artwork from foreign editions of the work, letters to and from Michael Moorcock, essays on Elric and much more—and each is fully illustrated by a well-known in the SF/fantasy field. Moore’s foreword and Michael Moorcock’s introduction to the series appear in this week’s 50 Page Friday excerpt from the first book in the series, Elric: The Stealer of Souls. Artwork is by John Picacio.”
