December is here and with it the holiday gift-giving season!
When it comes to objects, I’m a minimalist. Those authors who have been in my home know this. Though nice, I have few things. I have my signed books—some on bookcases, others on my desk. I have two pieces of artwork on my walls, both framed Michael Whelan signed prints. I don’t have a couch. I don’t have a recliner. I have a Mac on my desk, an iPad on my night stand, and a new television powered by Netflix that I watch from my computer chair when I need to decompress while doing web work.
That doesn’t mean I don’t have a wish list though. There are some really cool items out there and this is the season I begin thinking, “Wouldn’t it be neat if I had X or X or X or X?”
For the month of December I’ll post some of my own personal picks, some of which I’m sure will also excite some of you, maybe to the point you add them to your own gift wish lists!
Day 21: The Making of The Empire Strikes Back by J.W. Rinzler

In 2011, George Lucas and Lucasfilm will be releasing the two Star Wars trilogies on Blu-ray. They will most certainly be the Star Wars gift to give during the 2011 holiday season.
We are not there yet though. It’s still 2010, if barely. That means there is another Star Wars gift to give this year, one that any and all Star Wars fans should love to possess.
It’s the The Making of The Empire Strikes Back by J.W. Rinzler!
When I was at the NY Comic Con in October, I had the chance to sit down and interview the writer, J.W. Rinzler. He works at Skywalker Ranch as an executive editor at Lucasfilm Ltd. and is the author of the New York Times bestseller The Making of Star Wars. He is a man possessed of keen knowledge concerning Star Wars as well as film history and he did a wonderful job on The Making of The Empire Strikes Back. It is a massive gathering of information about the movie most fans consider to be the best of the six. And at 362 pages, it goes beyond its predecessor with more behind-the-scenes info, early scripts, production notes, and stories from those who were there, including the recently deceased director Irvin Kershner.
The Making of The Empire Strikes Back is one of those rare books for the Star Wars geek, where every page is filled with geeky information we geeks can wow our geek friends with at parties, conventions and the like.
Got that Star Wars fan in your life and don’t know what to get them?
The Making of The Empire Strikes Back is it!
