I’ve read quite a few good books this year. Here are some I still remember well:
I don’t usually care for vampire stories, but I couldn’t put this one down. The first of three, it is big and sprawling, an end-of-the-world novel reminiscent of Stephen King’s The Stand. A terrific read.
A young-adult baseball story with magic and kids. Again, the world is in danger of ending, due to the machinations of old Coyote, and only baseball and a kid who doesn’t believe in himself can save the day.
Right in the middle of this one, so I have to be quick here so I can get back to it. A prison that’s alive, a boy looking for the Outer World and a girl who is the daughter of the warden of the prison. Lots more, but the magic again plays a part in things. Just finished this true story of a man-eating Siberian tiger and the hunt to find it and to discover why it tracked and killed specific victims. Learned a lot about tigers, much of which raised the hair on the back of my neck. Lots of history and anthropology, but the tiger parts will have you riveted.
Anything by Robert Crais or T. Jefferson Parker
A new one comes out from each writer every year. Thrillers, but studies of human behavior and motivation, as well. Crais tends to be a wild ride, Parker a slower, more introspective walk. I love them both.
