Brandon Sanderson provides a different take on this fight
How we think the fight will go
She knew it had to be quick, but that wasn’t the way the wizard was letting her play it out.
Not since she had killed the Lord Ruler had Vin experienced such doubt about a fight–it was if the man below her was made to fight a Mistborn.
The arena they were in was something she hadn’t anticipated, and although she had the ability to go up, her lateral movements were limited by the walls. Very little metal about, too.
They’re making me fight fair, she thought. How is that fair?
She was floating above him–the man called, strangely, Zeddicus. From up high, she could see a harbor full of ships in whatever strange land they were fighting in. She could also see the spectators were separated from the wall of the arena by a wide moat. And although she was burning atium, it didn’t seem to matter:
Knowing where his attacks were coming from didn’t stop them from doing damage.
That was because Zeddicus wasn’t focusing on her. Rather, he was focusing on the coins she was dropping to keep herself out of harms way.
The Wizard’s Fire spouted from his hand again, and as the intense heat covered the copper penny she was Pushing off of to keep aloft, it slowly began to melt. It wasn’t as if the melted metal didn’t still allow her to Push, but it was melting into the earth, spreading, becoming thinner.
Making it more and more difficult for her to focus her Push.
She wobbled and start to descend.
Just as bad, the flames–though not reaching her, yet–were below her, and the heat was almost too much. She was able to dodge when he shot it at her, but the arena was acting almost like a stone oven–the water in the moat giving off steam, but it’s insulating properties apparent, now–and if wasn’t for her pewter, she would have been overcome long ago.
She Pulled on an iron torch-sconce in the stands, and flew across the stadium, the relief from not being roasted almost distracting.
Safe for the moment, it didn’t help Vin realize something: She was running out of options.
She threw a spread of coins at the wizard, and a casual flick of his hand sent them flying in other directions. This wasn’t a matter of allomantic strength, but a power she didn’t think someone could possess.
Before he did it, Vin saw another spurt of flame shoot from his hand, and so she was already moving in the other direction, running as fast as her pewter would allow her. Creating a little space, she downed three vials of pewter, feeling her body lagging with all the exertion. It was dangerous to take in so much metal, but it was dangerous just being here.
She couldn’t keep this up.
Burning duralumin, she flared both pewter and and iron, her eyes focused on something beyond what any of the spectators could see. Vin was concentrating so hard that she didn’t hear the crowd gasp, and didn’t even see Zeddicus aim his flames at her.
The fires leapt at her, a dancing inferno which pummeled her mistcloak, her hair, her body. Her pewter burning strong, she felt the heat, but didn’t succumb, though her clothes fell to the ground like the ash that Ashmounts deposited on the Final Empire. Her extra metals exploded as the alcohol in the vials turned them into tiny bombs.
Still she concentrated, her back firmly against the stone wall.
Her pewter was running out–she could feel it. But she Pulled anyway, reaching, doing something she never would have thought possible. Vin knew she had no choice, though.
It was going to take the impossible.
The fires grew hotter, her pewter almost gone. A rumbling sound echoed from the far side of the stadium. The spectators screamed, but again their screams meant nothing.
She flared the rest of her pewter and iron–the duralumin intensifying her strength–and Pulled.
With a crash, a tremendous anchor burst through the wall of the arena, killing many of the men and women watching the fight.
More importantly, though, it was coming straight at Vin–with Zeddicus between them.
He turned in time to feel the impact of the massive hunk of metal crush him to a pulp, even as it flew inexorably towards Vin.
Her burns so grievous, she didn’t even seem to care. She was beyond exhaustion, her pewter used up and the pain excruciating.
The anchor kept coming.
She watched it come, almost welcoming her fate, knowing she had won…
Only to see it fall just feet before her sprawled out body.
Her iron had run out, and without the Pull–and the momentum lost by crashing through arena and wizard–it’s weight was just too much to keep coming at Vin.
She lay on the ground, staring at the anchor, not caring as the destroyed wizard’s body dripped gore on to her.
All she cared was whether or not Elend would bring her pewter in time.
Predicted Winner: Vin
NOTE: THIS MATCH ENDS ON THURSDAY, MARCH 24TH, 2011, AT 5 PM, ET

I think the battle will be like a chess match and they will keep talking to each other between attacks. In the end Vin will not back down but Zedd will find a way to let her stop fighting without losing, and they will decide that they are not enemys.
I really enjoyed both books, and so know the characters and the mythology quite well for both. And I like both characters, and in an actual situation they wouldn’t fight, but that’d be no fun if that was the case.
Its clear to me that the organisers here are favouring away from SoT (I saw the write up for Kahlan last year, I don’t think she’d actually get very far in these cage fights but I honestly think that they portrayed her with no skills/advantages which isn’t true. Though she can be ridicolously whiny at times) so Zedd looks to be in trouble anyway but…
…as much as I like SoT I’d hand the advantage to Vin. It’d be a close one but it would still be Vin that won.
We should presume that she could burn copper in order to ‘hide’ herself, as Richard does with the Mristwith cape, and so she could conceivably sneak up on Zedd. Plus lets face it Zedd would be stood there trying to work out how she can ‘fly’
Also, to add to the point about her becoming a God (which does happen, pretty much how it sounds) she can also use the mists if she runs out of metals (so long as she isn’t wearing her bronze earing). So if they were there (possible as they’re part of the environment) then thats what she’d do.
Zedd is smart and he would put up a good fight, however in my view the write up showed neither of them to their best, Vin would have flung out another coin instead of relying on a melting one for a start. Both of them deserve a better (and fairer) fight.
Still in my mind Vin would/will be the winner. Besides come on she’s died once give her a break! 11 books on a despite multiple scrapes Zedd is still alive at the end of SoT…
If they could have had a SoT character why on earth did they not choose a Mord Sith. Cara would have been good!
so, remember the ’slow clap’ from 80’s movies? Yeah, that one that is a frakkin joke? The one that mocks its recipient?
This is me slow clapping the person w/no life who voted 1000 TIMES in one day to boost Vin up that far….wow….I mean….wow, really? Do you have anything resembling an existence?
I’m all for a good natured use of the system against itself, one that allows multiple votes by one user, its all in good fun that way…..but 1000 votes? Really? WTF?
SUVUDU, you need to make it necessary for people to register or drop an email addy to vote. This match has made that all too clear. Please resolve this issue as it takes it from being a playful fight to a ludicrous waste of time.
And I don’t care who would ‘really’ win. Flying Spaghetti Monster all mighty…..give that person a job. They’re gonna go blind from suvudu reload…
@getalife1000voter: While we can’t be certain where these extra votes came from, it should be noted that Brandon Sanderson blogged about this, and has a pretty dedicated following. It’s not surprising that the votes spiked after he posted his write-up.
That said, while it would be great to have a system in place that verified the one-person, one-vote rule, it’s simply too unwieldy for what’s basically a fun poll.
Zedd’s nickname is “The Trickster”…. While Vin has many options available to her, Zedd’s intelligence and command of magic that is only touched upon in the SoT series would leave Vin in the dark and ultimately he would outwit her with her ability to see in the future, imho.
@Unstatisfied you are correct Zed is better then he is made sound but so is Vin. I once again think it would be a close fight but to act like he would win because he is “the trickster” doesn’t hold ground. Remember when Vin killed the Lord Ruler who was basically a god? Remember when Vin basically became a god? So basically everyone who says one has the upper hand over the other is kind of dumb. Depending on the situation either character could win the fight and it would probably come down to the wire in nearly every fight. To my knowledge both are ridiculously good at getting out of seemingly hopeless situations.
Hopefully, Vin will win against Jon. Then we will have an interest Vin vs Perrin battle to see whether WoT or Sanderson has more fans.
I vote for Zedd!!!
By the way, it is not possible to vote multiple times, as a freind of mine tried this. it just says thankyou, but we have already counted your vote. Also, i think Vin would be able to beat preaty much any of the remaining contestents, with the possible exception of quick ben. I’m a WOT fan, but perrin would not stand a chance vs. vin, if it was a fair fight
To the one who whined about Vin getting a thousand votes in one day:
She is awesome. And Sanderson blogged about it. And I follow any links he posts, is how I found the Cage Match last year. And I know I am not alone. And you are spewing sour grapes which is unbecoming.
Get over yourself.
Vin won because the Mistborn series and Vin especially trump anything Goodkind has ever written. In only three books. I know because I tried to get through TSOT series and couldn’t make it past Temple of the Winds. No, I do not believe my friend who swears it gets better again. Yes I read through the preceding books before it hoping the series would be cool eventually. I like to read fantasy when I pick up a fantasy book, not political treatises. Sanderson’s write up is much more accurate in how this, in fact, would go.
Anyway, this whole thing is a popularity contest, as proven by Martin beating Fitz in the first round. But it IS fun, so I come back.
Sandersons write-up about the fight is just great! I laughed so hard… Go Vin!
@ both peter and Jen Fiddles
Peter yes you can because I have done it for quick ben….many times.
Jen, awesome is such a stretch….and I was watching the votes. They weren’t haphazardly coming in. They were dropping in a regular sequence, 1 by 1 over a consistent period of time (how long it took them to shut down and reload page). Your mysterious voter cheated like no other to win. Just learn to live with it.
Btw, if they had merely done it to 300 or so I would never have said a word. That is acceptable, but by going that far out with it goes to show just how much this system of voting needs to be revamped.
BTW, last I checked, Goodkind has far outsold sanderson’s mistborn series…..by quite a fair margin….
success in the book world is determined by how much you sell….That would mean Goodkind is a more successful writer….not including sanderson’s co-writing of WOT
WOT fans, I am not talking about WOT sanderson at all. I am ecstatic that he is with us to complete Rigney’s work.
clap…..clap…..clap…..clap…..clap…..clap…..clap…..clap……clap…….clap…..clap….clap
@getalife1000voter
“Peter yes you can because I have done it for quick ben….many times.” How do you do this because I have tried with four different browsers, different computers and different locations? I would send a few extra votes to some characters if I could. (Not 1000 since I have a life)
@getalife1000voter
I do think it is stupid when people do not have lives but the whole thousand vote thing but you have no Idea if it is true or not and can not prove it so don’t worry about it because Vin beat him. Also Goodkind has been writing his series since the early 90s hardly a fair comparison when a series is longer and had way more time then another. Both amazing authors but your comparison is horribly flawed when you do not factor length or age of series.
@getalife1000voter… Goodkind has been writing for a much longer time than Sanderson, and has many more books in print. Just saying. Amount of copies sold doesn’t necessarily mean the author is better either, look at the the Davinci Code. Dan Brown should not be aloud to own a word processor, yet his book has sold over 80 million copies.
P.S – I realize I used the wrong ‘allowed’
@Pissant (getalife)
Your argument is fail.
Sales don’t necessarily mean it’s a good series. Look at Twilight. Are you going to claim that Meyer is a good writer?
First–Vin has over 1,000 votes more than Zedd. Who cares if somebody put 1,000 votes in. 2nd, the poll records your I.P. as a vote, so for somebody to vote 1,000 times, they would have to grab a new I.P. for each vote and reload the page. Try voting multiple times in a row by just refreshing the browser page, the top of the poll says: “Thanks for voting, but we’ve already recorded your vote.”
Finally, Brandon Sanderson is a much better author than Terry Goodkind. Goodkind has sold more, however, that is only because he’s been published since Brandon was in middle school. Twenty years from now when Sanderson has six books from WoK out, people will scoff at Goodkinds SoT series.
Oh, wait, they already do.
no, don’t need a new IP. sigh. idiots. learn how to use a computer.
Fine, not number of books but number of readers. Goodkind still wins. Deal. You mysterious voter cheated to win. You cheated. It is ludicrous. My argument has absolutely nothing to do with who would win, but how they won. Y’all might want to reconsider getting yourselves a diploma….at least from a high school. Learn to read. Then come back at me.+
clap…..clap…..clap……clap……clap…..clap…..clap….clap…..clap
@getalife1000voter
Brandon Sanderson is far more in touch with his readers than Goodkind. He participates actively in Social media, so he is able to point his fans to this site, while Goodkind doesn’t give a shit. It doesn’t matter who has sold more books, Sanderson has more fans, due to both Mistborn *and* the Wheel of Time.
And the Wheel of Time *has* outsold the Sword of Truth, twice over.
you people are all idiots. arguing about who has sold more books, or who has bigger fan bases… and WoT outselling SoT really has nothing to do with sanderson at all. He is simply putting words to paper for another. All this arguing about who is better is idiocy, plain and simple. If you were to take the books away from the genre, and read them for simple pure entertainment, you’ll surely find that they are all great books, written by people who are passionate about the words they put into them. Get over yourselves and quit prattling like a gaggle of school girls.
Come on people, havn’t you been reading the signs?
*Points at where it reads “Don’t Feed the Trolls”*
Its like feeding stray cats, they will go away if you ignore them.
I just want to learn the secret to voting more than once without changing IP addresses. I’ll confess, I’m hopeless with anything other than basic computer stuff, but this strange secret is starting to bother me… I remember last cage match you could vote multiple times, but then they implemented this IP thing to avoid such shenanigans. Or so I thought..
@GetaLife: Sorry to kick the dead dog around a few times, but my dogs are dumb and I have a lot of repressed anger towards them. What is your secret?
hahahaha Sanderson rules!
Whether or not Vin loses, she will most definitely want to die after receiving and hour long monologue about the virtues of capitalism and how horrible fascism is.
FYI, Vin wins even IF one person voted 1000 times for her.
Moot point.
I know that this is long over, and most likely nobody who cares will see this, but I’m annoyed that they used a picture from that terrible TV adaptation of the SoT books for Zed.
