The Del Rey Spectra horde, being denizens of New York City, are pretty excited for the promise of spring. Sure it rained cats and dogs last night, but the temperature has been rising and we of course “spring ahead” this weekend (remember to turn those clocks forward). Spring not only means warmer weather, but also a new book from China Mieville, who has been igniting imaginations with his thought provoking, mesmerizing brand of fantasy for quite some time. While China’s new book Embassytown is not out for a few more months, this week’s 50 Page Friday excerpt features Kraken, China’s self-described “dark comedy”. What is fascinating about the book is China’s amazing ability to make the absurd seem real and believable. In the book underground religious cults in London are prophesying the end of the world, centered on the fact that the 40 foot giant squid specimen housed at the British Museum of Natural history has disappeared overnight. Really?! Really. Kraken is a wild romp of novel and has won a treble of awards, including the 2010 Arthur C. Clarke Award, 2010 Hugo Award, and the 2010 World Fantasy Award.
