Del Rey Spectra 50 Page Fridays: Peter Watts

Del Rey Spectra 50 Page Fridays: Peter Watts

Every Friday, we here @ Del Rey Spectra will place a 50 page excerpt of a selected title on Suvudu. Whether it be science fiction, epic fantasy, alternate history, horror, urban fantasy, paranormal, the possibilities are endless.

This week’s excerpt features Crysis: Legion by Peter Watts. Here’s what Del Rey editor Mike Braff had to say about the book:

Crysis was one of the most critically acclaimed first-person shooters ever to grace PC monitors of the world and the Crytek team has been hard at work on the sequel, Crysis 2, for a number of years.  When it came time to create the novelization of the game, the Crytek team had one person in mind: Peter Watts.

Known for his visceral and, above all else, realistic science fiction, Peter Watts is the only author that could bring the pulse-pounding action of Crysis 2 to the page.  But this is not just some re-telling of the game events, (“I ran into the room.  I shot the bad guy in the head.”), this is an expansive and exhaustive look at the characters, battles, technology, and history of the Crytek world.  Peter has gone above and beyond the call of duty (no pun intended) to create a multi-layered masterpiece that weaves first-person narrative, government documents, and interview transcripts into a haunting tale of technology and terror in near-future Manhattan.

When an alien race known as the Ceph emerge in Manhattan and start making a rather large mess of things, Alcatraz is one of the many ground troops called in to settle things down.  Within moments of arriving and finding his squad out-gunned, Alcatraz is swept up into one of the most technologically awe-inspiring creations in recent memory: the N2, a carbon-fiber suit that amplifies muscle power, increases your speed, and can make you invisible.  But, Alcatraz will soon learn that the cost of having the best toys on the playground is extraordinarily high, as he fights his way through Manhattan to try and discover the origins of the Ceph, and of the N2.  I know I am biased, but I genuinely believe this is one of the best videogame tie-in novels ever written and, lucky you, you get to read the first 50 pages right here.

Enjoy, and don’t forget to check out the first part of Peter Watts’ behind-the-scenes look at the science of the N2 here.

I’m already a fan of Dr. Watts’ fiction, so I don’t need to read the 50 page excerpt to know that I will be purchasing this book! His Rifters trilogy and Blindsight are brilliant, hard-edged sci (not-so-) fi novels.
