This week’s excerpt is RETRIBUTION FALLS by Chris Wooding, a fun sci-fi tale of space pirates and their infamous ship, the Ketty Jay. Here’s what Chris’s editor David Pomerico had to say about the book:
“There’s something so incredibly appealing about pirates. Whether it’s Jack Sparrow making an escape or Wesley returned as the Dread Pirate Roberts, pirates capture our imagination. They’re brave. They’re resourceful. They’re clever. They’re even—to some people—incredibly sexy.
The characters in Retribution Falls are not those kinds of pirates.
I think that’s what drew me to these books in the first place—the incredibly flawed crew of the Ketty Jay, starting with the captain, Darian Frey (whose logbook is available to public scrutiny here). Sure, Darian had a certain roguish charm that’s going to evince comparisons to Han Solo and Malcolm Reynolds, but unlike those other two characters, he’s not really very good at being a pirate.
He’s more bungler, less buccaneer.
And yet he drew me in, and the rest of the story did as well. Yeah, it was a little down-and-dirty–a little seat-of-your-pants, can-they-pull-this-off–but that’s also what made it so fun. For me, that was the key:
This book is fun.
But don’t take my word for it. Take Chris Wooding’s word—or better yet, the first fifty pages of his words. See if you can resist sky-pirate adventure. Con-men and betrayals. Magic and huge mechanical golems. Gun fights and rescues and damsels and undead and bad-ass knights and steampunk worlds and…
I think you’re going to be, ahem, hooked.
