China Mieville visited my home late this morning to sign copies of his new book, Embassytown, as well as do a brief video interview answering those questions that were sent into the Suvudu website on Thursday.
He walked through the door with his tour driver and immediately gave me a huge hug. It was unexpected. Yes, he’s a super nice guy, one that belies his dark and sinister photos, but I’ve had the chance to know China for almost ten years and it was the third time he’s entered my home. Maybe the hug was for the trials I’m currently being put through with cancer; maybe the hug was a bonding that eventually happens between all gorgeously bald men.
We got caught up on what has been occurring in our lives and then China sat down to sign books. After I gave him a letter from an ardent fan that damn near made him blush from its enthusiasm for his work, China sat before the camera to answer questions sent in by all of you.
Here is that almost-ten-minute interview:
Interview: China Mieville and Embassytown from Suvudu on Vimeo.
As always, as you can see, China is the wittiest of guys, one who woos men and women alike with his UK accent, sophisticated smarts, and of course beautiful baldness. Most of all, he’s a great writer, one who deserved that “quantum” Hugo Award last year. If you get a chance to see China on tour at any time, go. You won’t be disappointed.
And now that I’ve finished Embassytown, I can tell you that he will undoubtedly be nominated for the Nebula and Hugo again next year.
Thanks to all of you who sent in the questions! Hope you enjoyed their answers!

Very interesting, as to be expected
Thanks for setting this up, Shawn.
Thank you for the interview. It made me smile all over again. I saw him when he was here in Seattle. He’s so nice and funny! His success hasn’t spoiled him, he’s simply genuine and smart. I would recommend any fan to see him if you have the chance.
Awesome. Thank you for asking my question!
Wow I love that man. Can I have him? Please?
How do you get Mieville to visit your home? I want to meet him too if possible
Thank you so much for your interview. I saw him the next day in Portland. I’m quite new to his work and was so glad I attended his reading. I agree with the above comments: genuine, warm, funny, and brilliant. I look forward to reading his work and felt honored to see him.
