Excerpt: Inheritance by Christopher Paolini

inheritance-excerptChristopher Paolini and Random House have released an exclusive excerpt for Inheritance, the final book in the four-book Inheritance cycle!

Here is the book’s summary, followed by the excerpt:

Not so very long ago, Eragon—Shadeslayer, Dragon Rider—was nothing more than a poor farm boy, and his dragon, Saphira, only a blue stone in the forest. Now the fate of an entire civilization rests on their shoulders.

Long months of training and battle have brought victories and hope, but they have also brought heartbreaking loss. And still, the real battle lies ahead: they must confront Galbatorix. When they do, they will have to be strong enough to defeat him. And if they cannot, no one can. There will be no second chances.

The Rider and his dragon have come further than anyone dared to hope. But can they topple the evil king and restore justice to Alagaësia? And if so, at what cost?

This is the much-anticipated, astonishing conclusion to the worldwide bestselling Inheritance cycle.

Roran was trying to practice magic in the other books, I wouldn’t count him out just yet.

  3. Ashton says:

I’m starting to think that I shouldn’t have read that, it is just depressing, but then again you never know these things in these books, maybe he some how survives

  4. chris says:

well I doubt any author would kill off a character and let everyone know before the book is even out….he will probably make it out alive :D …..I hope

  5. Ryan says:

    aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that is so depressing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11111

  9. jess says:

oh.my.god. i wish i hadnt read that. roran caaant die!!! wbout his wifeeeee and baby D:

  10. How can the author show the death of such an important character in an excerpt? Obviously, Roran doesn’t die at this part of the book, maybe later, but not just yet.

  11. Lizzy says:

OMG!!! I can’t believe that excerpt. He better not die. He better have magical abilities he hasn’t yet discovered or something. His wife and baby and everyone from his village need him!!!

  12. christian says:

    aaaaaaaaaaaaauuugh

  13. Nikki says:

    OMiGawd. I’m depressed now. :(
Eragon will prob save him with his magic before Roran can die.

  14. Anonymouse says:

Its obvious that Roran will do somthing totally ninja and frontflip accross that crack, and throw his hammer over Eragon’s shoulder and kill an assain abot to kill eragon. I hope

  15. dancot says:

he is standing in a doorway, the wall is going to fall around him, not on him

  16. James says:

Glad he died I hated him

  17. Some Guy says:

you hater “james” THIS is an example of great writing, leaving a cliff hanger in an excerpt!!!! Amazing, and yet depressing!!!

  18. Why should i tell u my name? says:

Relax, Roran won’t die. CP wouldn’t kill him this early.

  19. the voice in everyone's head says:

aw man! now i almost wish i hadn’t begged for my House of Night book. I can’t wait til I get Inheritance for my b-day!! I hope he hasn’t killed off Roran!

  20. you dont need to know says:

…what…the…why this page of the entire book….

  21. Roran is a key character throughout the books, so I don’t think the author would show him dying in a sneak peak of the book. But just in case… NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! :(

  22. wpbt says:

i read the bok he dosent die

  23. Beth says:

OMG!!!!!!! Roran can’t die!!!!!!! He had to have mastered the rock lifting spell, he just had to have!!!!!!! Either that, or Eragon, Arya, and Blodhgarm whip up some major mojo and save him. What would happen to Katrina and the baby?
