It’s day three of our bonus 50 PF coverage and today’s excerpt is from a true legend in the sci-fi/fantasy world: Anne McCaffrey. She’s been telling tales of her wondrous world of Pern for years now and has lately been teaming up with her son Todd to pen some amazing stories. Del Rey Spectra editor David Pomerico sheds a little light on the Pern universe and chats with Todd about the brand new book in the series, Dragon’s Time:
“Perhaps one of the most beloved science fiction series of all times, the Dragonriders of Pern have captured the imaginations of generations of readers. I know the first time I picked Dragonflight, I was amazed by what seemed such a simple idea: dragons not in a fantasy world. It was brilliant, and I kept wanting to learn more about this world—leading me to explore a rich story-telling experience that is almost certainly canonical in the science fiction genre (if not any genre).
For over 40 years the Pern novels have been regaling us with tales of the dragons and their riders in the world the Anne McCaffrey created. For the past ten years, she and her son, Todd McCaffrey, have collaborated on the novels, with Todd taking the reins with Dragonsblood. When Anne read this novel (as well as Dragonheart andDragongirl), she was so excited about where Todd was taking Pern that they happily agreed to once again work together.
Dragon’s Time is the result.
When asked what the new novel is about, this is what Todd had to say:
“‘The way forward is dark and long. A dragon gold is not the only price you’ll pay for Pern.’ This was the prophecy that Tenniz, the Seer of the traders, had left at Telgar Weyr for Lorana. Somehow he knew that she, who had lost her own queen dragon in her desperate fight to save Pern’s dragons from the horrible sickness that was devastating them, would come from her Benden Weyr home to this other, strange place. The prophecy which was revealed in Dragongirlinspires Lorana on her dark journey between space and time — that journey is chronicled in Dragon’s Time.”
