Suvudu is attending the 2011 San Diego Comic Con!
Why? Because Suvudu is like Comic Con all year ’round!
The crazy thing is, the convention is only a week away. Soon I will be flying out of Seattle to join my other Suvudu contributors in SoCal. There are also dozens of fantasy and sci-fi authors attending the convention. To use a word from The Three Amigos, a plethora. That means Suvudu will be surrounded by some of the best in the business—not to mention 120,000 geeking fans.
That’s where you come in!
Not everyone can attend Comic Con. They have limited space. Therefore, I am video interviewing a number of authors while in San Diego and one of them is the greatly bearded Patrick Rothfuss!
So post your questions for Pat below in the comments field. I’ll try my best to ask him as many as possible in the time we have allotted—on video, even!
Also, if any of you are going to 2011 Comic Con, be sure to find the Random House / Suvudu aisle. We’ll be in the thick of it. Stop by and say hello. Who knows? We may even want to sit you down for a video interview of your own about the convention, what you’ve purchased, who you’ve met and what you’ve gotten signed!
More in a week! Stay tuned!

I believe you’ve described yourself as a discovery writer. Can you go into more detail about the nitty-gritty details of your writing process? Do you for example go back and rewrite certain sections or do you just plow ahead?
From reading your blog (Pat’s) I know that asking you to choose a favourite book would be rather difficult but in my case anyway I know that their was a certain book that got me into reading fantasy. Before reading it I couldn’t stand reading but since then when I was about 9 I haven’t stopped. Is their a similar book in your case.
I’ve heard rumors that you are, in real life, well coiffed and clean shaven. When you want to be recognized, you don the wild hair and beard, but when you want to go incognito, you slip out without these recognizable attributes. Any truth to this rumor?
i need something to tide me over until your
next book comes out. whats your fav. book series ever ? after reading your books I totally trust your judgment !!!
Why was the door in Elodin’s cell made of copper, and why was copper outside the wall? is there some anti-sympathy property in copper?
You are given the task of constructing a Frankenstein’s monster of an author. Which parts of which authors would you use, and why?
Oot???
I also wanted to ask about a quality I have picked up on in your books That is, that where most of the fantasy genre is concerned with world toppling events and extremely upscaled worlds and events yours are a much more personal and the exaggerate the characters emotions and depth, To use the wise mans fear as an analogy you describe you describe Aturan and Ademic, as being Wide and shallow and a deep well. This is the feeling I get.
I also just wanted to say that wether or not it was intentional I love to think of the Cthaeh in terms of quantum mechanics, Where the mortal’s life until it has been observed by an outside observer has an indeterminate amount of possibilities in the future. But as soon as it is observed it is forced to become one or the other.
I’m not sure if this was addressed yet or not, but are there any film adaptations in the works or scripts being considered for production?
Are there any discussions over the Movie/TV rights for your books? I’m curious to know if you’ve been approached at all.
Thanks!
Has there been any serious thought into creating a television series based off the trilogy? The Game of Thrones has proven to become an amazing show, with the right producer/director The Name of The Wind could be done amazingly.
Is Elodin really crazy or is he merely pretending to be off his rocker? Also will we find out how Kvothe meats Bast in the final book?
Throughout the Kingkiller Chronicle I have been struck by how vividly imagined Kvothe’s bond is with his music. The sequence from NOTW where Kvothe plays his lute alone in the woods for months as its strings break one by one in particular springs to memory. Do you have any personal musical experience that you drew from in imagining Kvothe the musician? Or are there any real-world musicians who inspired you? If Kvothe had an iPod, what would be on it? Thank you!
Will Patrick Rothfuss’ involvement with Kvothe end after the next book or will we get to explore Kvothe’s present as fully as his past….?
I was wondering if all of these secrets that have been surrounding Kvothe like invisible carrion birds will be seen by Kvothe? In NOTW and WMF the reader is told many of these secrets without Kvothe himself (or at least the younger version of himself) knowing or realizing what the secrets are (I don’t plan on ruining them for other readers who may not have caught on yet) but I am wondering if the Kvothe of book three starts to bend his exceeding intelligence towards piecing the parts of the secrets he has together or if he will keep chasing them head on, like Elodin has been trying to break him of doing?
Patrick, I have wondered when this world of yours started to form in that head of yours. Is it something you’ve been trying to put to paper…Erm computer for years? Or is it just a piece that came to you overnight?
I was wondering if there’s some hope in the future that the songs in the books be released as an album…?
How does the pain your characters go through, feel to you while writing? (usually for me I am giddy and absorbed in the moment)
Kvothe’s journey from The University to meet The Maer seems like an absurdly interesting story that was chopped from the The Wise Man’s Fear. Are there pages of this tale that were cut from the book that described this journey? If so, is there a chance that the readers will get a peek? I would gladly pay a fee to read about this (as I am sure others would as well)….maybe in an online form? Seems like a good opportunity to raise money for some type of charity (ahem, Heifer International). Thanks for everything you do.
Since I am too dumb to find anything on my following question: how long will we be looking forward to the next book?
I love both the books you wrote, the story as well as the style, and the characters, and the humor. And Kvothe, of course. Well, I just love them. I wonder, though, why you chose to use the names Alpha and Beta in the first one and words like “pariah” in the second one. I found them to be out of context: they’re terms for our world, not Kvothe’s -as long as I know- but I’d like to know whether there’s a reason I simply don’t get. Thanks and ciao.
Altough almost everyone loves your books, some people seem to have a problem with Denna. There are quite some people who don’t like her as a character (which I don’t get at all, I really love her). Do you have a explanation for this reaction? Are you surprised by it or have you even intended it?
As an aspiring writer, one of the main obstacles I face is to simply write away. Perhaps it’s the engineer in me striving to plan everything out before writing, perhaps I’m just a nutter, but when you first started out, did you have a well thought out plan like Jim Butcher describes in his journal, or did you just start writing, machine gun style, and when it was all done you got to chopping away at the bits that made no sense or needed re-writing?
You write first and foremost from the first person point of view. As such, we see characters through the eyes of Kvothe and not a neutral narrator. Can you explain the difficulties and intricacies of portraying characters such as Denna and Elodin from Kvothe’s POV when in you know the true scope of their lives/backgrounds, etc? How do you go about making the reader see the subtle underlying character traits without compromising Kvothe’s feelings and beliefs about them?
“The Name Of The Wind” is my favourite book!
Because I am from Switzerland, I read it in german.
Can you tell me when “The Wise Man`s Fear” comes out in german?
What do you like to do when there’s nothing to do?
While the Kingkiller Chronicles are your only works being actively published, have you begun working on any side projects that we may see in the future? Even if this is not the case, would you consider another series at some point and would it be based in the same “world” that you’ve created?
Will you ever write a book with Elodin as the main character?
Pat,
I was curious if you had more books like “Princess and Mr. Wiffle” on the horizon…thoughts…possible alternate realities. It is a unique book and fun to explore.
Hello Mr. Rothfuss,
I loved The Name of the Wind and really liked The Wise Man’s Fear. A major problem I had with The Wise Man’s Fear was there was a facet of the world building I found completely strained credulity. Honestly, how can there be any human society that does not uderstand basic human reproduction? Everyone from the native peoples in southernmost South America to the Inuit to the Bushmen of Africa to the aboriginals of Australia to peasants in central Asia know how women get pregnant. Look at all the fertility rites and symbols. Hell, if you have a pen full of pigs you don’t get piglets without a sow AND a boar. This is something EVERY culture in the world has known no doubt since the first people walked the planet. Did none of your beta readers comment on this? How much would it have hurt the story to leave it out?
Also, in NOTW Kvothe was flogged for Malfeasance and recognizes it as a grave crime, yet he uses it to kill and maim a large number of men in WMF with scarcely a thought for the consequences. He doesn’t even seem worried that word will get back to the University. Could you comment if this was supposed to represent Kvothe’s growing recklessness.
Thank you.
Are there any plans for a fourth book? The surrounding story (kvothe as an innkeeper telling the story of his life) seems to have a lot of potential. He can get back his drive, stop the war and do other things only his creator can think of etc.
Here’s a perhaps unusual question…
Given you list Anne McCaffrey’s Dragonriders of Pern series as one of several SF&F series that you grew up on, is Count Threpe an homage to Masterharper Robinton?
For those unfamiliar with Pern (heathens!) McCaffrey’s Robinton is the leader of a guild of musicians (the Harper Hall). He also has considerable political influence on Pern, and he’s supposed to be a both keen-minded and kindly man, who, while not exactly a gossip-monger, still keeps his ears wide open and those of his Harpers as well, so that he can get an idea of where the wind is blowing and manipulate things in Pern’s best interest.
Count Threpe strikes me as what might happen if you take a character with similar basic traits (intelligence, love of music, and an ear for gossip and social networking), and make his life a bit more realistic in regards to his place in it and his political reach.
I’m sure many of your beloved readers are wondering this. (Myself included.)
Questions:
Are there any plans for a movie at this point in time?
What are your feelings on a film adaptation of your books?
Are you planning on writing more of Kvothe or this world you have created once Day 3 has passed?
My beggings:
If you are thinking of ending the series after Day 3, please don’t!
If you were to write more passed The Kingkillers, please let it be about the Adem Mercenaries!
Thank you for reading my questions and considering them.
How much wrath would a Rothfuss wrought, if a Rothfuss had wrought wrath?
Also, do you shampoo your beard, use special beard soap, or just good ol’ body wash?
Will book 3 be the last for Kvothe?
What is your methods for maintaining that manly beard of yours?
