Del Rey Spectra 50 Page Fridays: Cherie Priest

Every Friday, we here @ Del Rey Spectra will place a 50 page excerpt of a selected title on Suvudu. Whether it be science fiction, epic fantasy, alternate history, horror, urban fantasy, paranormal, the possibilities are endless.

Our last 50 Pages Fridays excerpt of the summer, but it sure is a doozy. Earlier this year we game you a 50 PF sampling of Cherie Priest’s damn fantastic urban fantasy yarn BLOODSHOT. Well, Cherie’s back with HELLBENT, of course featuring the badass vampire thief Raylene Pendle. For more on Cherie and HELLBENT, here is her author Anne Groell:

“For anyone who fell as hard for Raylene as we did in BLOODSHOT–or for anyone who has yet to discover her charms–Raylene is back in Cherie Priest’s spunky and hilarious second urban fantasy novel, HELLBENT.  This neurotic lone wolf of a vampire has gradually been building herself a pack of like-minded misfits throughout the course of her first adventure: from the two street-wise orphans who squat in her warehouse amidst her pilfered treasures, to the delectably charming blind vampire, Ian Stott, to the smokingly hot ex-Navy Seal drag queen, Adrian deJesus.

But the life of a vampire thief never does run smoothly.  And when an old associate of hers asks her to go after a box of magical bacula (look it up; we don’t mean Scott!), she figures: how hard can it be?  But hard is indeed the operative word, for a brilliant but certifiably crazy sorceress will stop at nothing to harness their powers in her attempt to unmake the world.  Worse, after the death of his vaunted patriarch, Ian–one of the potential heirs to his powers–is now at the top of a vampire hit-list.  Can Raylene and Adrian snatch up the relics, solve a murder, and keep Ian safe, all while fending off a psychotic sorceress?

See for yourself why Kelley Armstrong calls this: “A darkly funny crime caper with an unforgettable heroine.”  We know that, once you’ve met her, you will love Raylene as much as we do.”
