Just before the winter holiday, I had received a manuscript called RED RISING from agent Hannah Bowman. It was about a young man toiling away in the bowels of Mars, knowing that his hard work and sacrifice would one day result in future generations walking upon the surface of the planet and being there to welcome the first wave new wave of humanity.
When he finds out, though, that humanity had already arrived generations ago–and that he and his family are being literally kept in the dark in order to ensure the production of vital resources–he knows revolution is at hand.
With the help of a group of mysterious rebels, he is physically transformed from the slave caste into one of the ruling elite, infiltrating their training school with the intention of rising in the ranks to take down his oppressors from the inside.
If he can survive the school…
Written by Pierce Brown, RED RISING was something I just couldn’t put down. Indeed, after a day of having it on submission, I was already pestering the rest of the Del Rey editors, saying “You have to read this!”
Not surprisingly, they all agreed, and now we have a new author and new books to add to the Del Rey list.

RED RISING is the first book in a trilogy, currently slated to be published in 2013. Along with Mike Braff’s acquisition of Jason M. Hough’s DARWIN ELEVATOR series and Anne Groell’s acquisition of Emma Jane Holloway’s GIMCRACK ANGELS series, 2013 is already shaping up to be an amazing year for Del Rey!
Looks like a welcome return to classic sci-fi.
