50 Page Fridays: Alan Dean Foster

Every Friday, we here @ Del Rey Spectra will place a 50 page excerpt of a selected title on Suvudu. Whether it is science fiction, epic fantasy, alternate history, horror, urban fantasy, paranormal, the possibilities are endless.

Alan Dean Foster’s latest novel is Body, Inc., the second installment of his Tipping Point Series. In a not so distant future, the world full of environmental damage and people can modify their bodies in ways you wouldn’t imagine. DRS editor Mike Braff tells us more:

“Creating near-future science-fiction is always a challenge, because one must envision a world that is fantastic and new, while at the same time, grounded in reasonable technological limitations. It is hardly a stretch to think that the technology of the 35th Century, for example, far exceeds our own limitations and expectations. However, the world of the 22nd Century will certainly feature many of the limitations that we currently face in our own time, yet there will undoubtedly be strides that we haven’t yet imagined. It is a thin line between plausible and incongruous, and nobody walks that line better than Alan Dean Foster.

In Foster’s Tipping Point Trilogy, the world of body modification has spread from tattoos and piercings to full-scale genetic manipulation, allowing people to stretch their bones to unfathomable lengths, insert gills into their necks, and a million other modifications. Some modifications are done to enable the individual to adapt to a new climate, or perform better at a given job, while some are simply for decoration. Unlike much of mass culture which seeks to homogenize, the future of these novels celebrates individualism in the extreme. And the best part? Every single mod that you come across is solidly plausible, even if the initial impression is one of stark incredulity.

A master of the genre, Alan Dean Foster provides the science behind the fiction and wraps the entire package up in an extremely fun and readable bow. Do yourself a favor and check out the second book in the Tipping Point Trilogy, Body, Inc.”
