50 Page Fridays: John Birmingham

Every Friday, we here @ Del Rey Spectra will place a 50 page excerpt of a selected title on Suvudu. Whether it is science fiction, epic fantasy, alternate history, horror, urban fantasy, paranormal, the possibilities are endless.

Let’s hear what DRS editor Tricia Narwani has to say about this week’s excerpt, taken from John Birmingham’s Without Warning:

“What would happen if America vanished? An unexplained phenomenon kills off 99% of the US population—and plunges the world into chaos and fear. This is the mind-blowing premise of Without Warning, John Birmingham’s explosive, propulsive, massively awesome alt-history techno-thriller. But what makes Without Warning so darned cool goes beyond the high concept; Birmingham explores the implications of his premise with real depth, creating a meticulously imagined depiction of a post-Pax Americana world. Indeed, Birmingham’s ability to do so many things well at once is what makes him one of the Del Rey list’s MVPs: Without Warning is thoughtful and intelligent…but still has an entirely satisfying quota of epic action scenes. It has a memorable cast of three-dimensional characters…but even as we get to know them the book’s breakneck pace never flags for an instant. Birmingham is Tom Clancy, James Rollins, and Michael Crichton all at once, with an extra quotient of sheer awesome.”

Now doesn’t that sound like something work checking out? Read the first 50 pages of this exciting sci-fi thriller below!

No explaination of what happened. No plausible science , no culprit, no reason for the shape of the \Wave\. Sloppy. I’ve read all of Mr. Birminghams book to date. 80% through with Angels and it’s always the same. Good story, good character depictions, average military knowledge and LOUSY science. If he ever realy figures out the science angle and bones up on real military equipment , care and maint. etc. he will take his place with Weber, Flint, Sterling etc. That said, I do enjoy the stories, science aside they are entertaining.
