Every Friday, we here @ Del Rey Spectra will place a 50 page excerpt of a selected title on Suvudu. Whether it is science fiction, epic fantasy, alternate history, horror, urban fantasy, paranormal, the possibilities are endless.
This week we bring you the latest urban fantasy from the desk of Ben Aaronovich. Whispers Under Ground tells the grisly story of a murder in London’s underground, and the interesting team of investigators–a beautiful FBI agent, sorcerer’s apprentice, and the victim’s family–trying to solve the case.
Fantasy fiction has given us countless wizards, magicians, sorcerors, generally of the graybearded, wizened, impressively learned sort. However, I can think of no magician who is quite like Peter Grant, the hero of Ben Aaronovitch’s Whispers Under Ground.
Peter did not apprentice to a Merlin type or graduate from a prestigious magic academy like Hogwarts; instead, he is the mixed-race son of a jazz musician who became a Probationary Constable and dearly wished to become a detective. And though Peter has found himself instead assigned to an occulut crimes division in the London police force, Peter’s story is recognizably grounded in real-life, contemporary London…and in its secret magical history. But what makes Peter truly unique is his voice: droll, dry, and witty. Peter may not be the most powerful magician in British fantasy—but he may very well be the funniest. Come meet him in Whispers Under Ground—and in the previous two Peter Grant adventures, Midnight Riot and Moon Over Soho.
