50 Page Fridays: Kelley Armstrong

Every Friday, we here @ Del Rey Spectra will place a 50 page excerpt of a selected title on Suvudu. Whether it is science fiction, epic fantasy, alternate history, horror, urban fantasy, paranormal, the possibilities are endless.

DIME STORE MAGIC, by Kelley Armstrong is an iconic urban fantasy featuring the rebellious young witch Paige Winterbourne. First seen in Stolen, Paige is the only daughter of the now deceased witch coven leader and expected to follow in her mother’s footsteps. The third book in the Otherworld series, but equally entertaining all on it’s own, Dime Store Magic is a bewitching tale sure to keep you on the edge of your seat. Del Rey Spectra editor Anne Groell tells us more:

“It is a rare and wonderful thing as an editor when you get that special tingle—that sudden intuition that you’ve totally got your hands on something unique—but it was a feeling I had in spades when I first read DIME STORE MAGIC. DIME STORE MAGIC was actually the first Kelley Armstrong novel I had ever read. I got it on submission and wanted to make sure it was the right book to jump lists with, that it could stand well on its own. So I deliberately bypassed the first two Otherworld books and just dove in…and then barely came up for air!

I still remember sitting in my office with the manuscript pages in my lap, getting totally caught up in Paige and Lucas’ world. Sometime, as an editor, you get these weird flashes of manuscript memory—where you were when you first read the pages. I have a vivid one with DIME STORE MAGIC. It was a brilliantly sunny day, and my office at the time faced west. There I sat in my chair with the sun pouring over me, and read and read and read, ignoring phones and e-mails and anything outside those pages. Then I ran down to tell my boss that we had to buy this book. (And then went out and devoured the first two books in the series.)

I have since had the extreme pleasure of working on eleven other books with Kelley. And I love every one of her books, but DIME STORE will always hold a special place in my heart, as it was my first introduction to the Otherworld and I’d remarkable women. So, can you start here? Absolutely! And if you have not experienced the Otherworld yet, then you are in for a genuine treat! And I hope the experience was as wonderful for you as it was for me.”
