Every Friday, we here @ Del Rey Spectra will place a 50 page excerpt of a selected title on Suvudu. Whether it is science fiction, epic fantasy, alternate history, horror, urban fantasy, paranormal, the possibilities are endless.
BAD GLASS, a haunting story submitted to last year’s Suvudu Writing Contest, is now a brand new book from Del Rey. Richard E. Gropp’s manuscript beat out almost 700 other entries to win the coveted prize: a full edit of his novel by an esteemed DRS editor, and a butt-load of free Del Rey books. His manuscript was so good that he also bagged a book deal.
DRS editor Mike Braff tells us more:
“This Friday we’ve got an excerpt from a novel close to the heart of Suvudu.com. Winner of the Suvudu Writing Contest, Bad Glass by Richard Gropp is a page-turning dark adventure set in a city on the precipice of psychosis. One of the things that impressed the editors at Del Rey the most was how stunning Richard Gropp’s prose is. His descriptions of horrific imagery have a certain delicate style to them, a haunting beauty that stays with the reader long after the book is finished. Add to that a realism in characterization and a taut, mysterious narrative, and you can see why Bad Glass not only won the contest, but was acquired by Del Rey for publication. Here’s the lowdown:
Something is wrong in Spokane, Washington. Very, very wrong. The entire city has been quarantined, but the reports leaking out point to horrific, strange occurrences: packs of animals that should not be, disappearances, humans fused with solid objects, and worse. Most have fled the insanity, but for aspiring photographer Dean Walker, the horrors of Spokane may be his big chance to get his name on the map. Sneaking into the closed-off city, Dean links up with a colorful crew of locals determined to stay, and quickly becomes embroiled in a web of intertwined secrets as the city’s madness engulfs them wholly. Dark and atmospheric, earnest and beautiful, Bad Glass will thrill fans of dark SF/F and horror alike.
We know you’ll love this book, but don’t take our word for it; check out the first 50 pages of Bad Glass today!”
