As some of you may know, the star-studded movie adaptation of David Mitchell’s novel Cloud Atlas hits theaters next Friday. What you may not know is that Random House has just released an enhanced e-book edition packed with behind-the-scenes production footage; interviews with the author, directors (Tom Tykwer, Andy Wachowski, and Lana Wachowski), and actors (Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugh Grant, Hugo Weaving, and James D’Arcy); and even some never-before-seen footage from the movie itself.
If you’re unfamiliar with Cloud Atlas, it tells the stories of six different people living in six different places at six completely different points in time. These six stories fit together like a puzzle, becoming more and more connected the further you read (this is a product of the book’s narrative structure—the 1st and 12th chapters start and finish one character’s story, the 2nd and 11th start and finish another’s, the 3rd and 10th another’s, and so on). With each chapter, each story, the reader is thrown farther and farther into the future until, after the 6th chapter, the narrative travels back to the beginning. Each character has his or her own struggles, but all of them are connected. You’ll walk away from Cloud Atlas with one simple realization: “souls cross ages like clouds cross skies, and though a cloud’s shape and size doesn’t stay the same, it’s still a cloud and so is a soul.”
