“In an age of stunning CG animations, it’s easy to be inured to special effects. I’ve seen all manner of impossible things brought to life on the big screen, but rarely have I witnessed anything as awe-inspiring as Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim. The sheer scale of the movie is breathtaking. It invokes the same glee I experienced as a child watching Godzilla movies. Pacific Rim brought all of that back to me in a surge of geeky joy. It’s not a perfect film, but it sure is fun; so fun, in fact, that I wanted more. And that is why I approached Joe Martin with the idea behind the anthology we’re calling Kaiju Rising: Age of Monsters.”
— Introduction from Project Creator, Nick Sharps
I couldn’t agree with Nick more in his assessment. There is something super fun about battling monsters the size of skyscrapers. Not only that, but rooting for the monsters at times!
Along with editor Tim Marquitz, Nick has put together a new anthology titled Kaiju Rising: Age of Monsters. They are using Kickstarter to launch the book!
I decided to interview Nick about the kickass project. Here you go:
Featured Kickstarter Interview: Kaiju Rising with Nick Sharps
Shawn Speakman: Tell Suvudu readers about your new Kickstarter project, KAIJU RISING?
Nick Sharps: KAIJU RISING
: Age of Monsters is an anthology inspired by movies like Pacific Rim, Godzilla, Cloverfield, and more. Ragnarok Publications has assembled 19 authors (and three stretch goal authors) to write stories celebrating kaiju by exploring new ways to experience the creatures that dominate our imagination. The anthology will open with a foreword by New York Times
bestselling author Jonathan Maberry and close with an afterword by Jeremy Robinson, author of the acclaimed kaiju novel Project Nemesis
Shawn Speakman: What is it about massive monsters that remains a part of our collective geekdom?
Nick Sharps: To quote one of our authors, Ed Erdelac, “Giant monsters are our ID rampant. Who would bear the slings and arrows etc. when they could just grow a hundred feet tall and stomp everything flat? Conversely, when an enormous beast rises out of the ocean and comes to get us, it represents every uncontrollable thing we fear, tsunami waves and terrorism and taxes -and jumping into a powered suit or a Super X-3 and decking it with a rocket powered punch or a brilliant volley of maser blasts is tremendously cathartic.”
Shawn Speakman: What are some of the cool levels / upgrades in your Kickstarter?
Nick Sharps: We have tiers for digital copies, trade paperback copies, hardcover and limited edition hardcover copies. We are offering backers to be redshirted/tuckerized by several of our authors. Perks include bookmarks and posters with Dan Howard’s amazing cover art featured on them, signed bookplates, exclusive KAIJU RISING
pewter coins, and of course – acknowledgement on our website. By reaching our $12,000 stretch goal, Kaiju Rising will come packaged with 19 pieces of original interior art work courtesy of Robert Elrod and Chuck Lukacs. After that we have three semi-secret stretch goal authors, whose stories will also get art as we unlock their levels. Should funding manage to reach $17,000 we have a legendary artist to provide us a one-of-a-kind illustration for KAIJU RISING
Shawn Speakman: Why use Kickstarter?
Nick Sharps: KAIJU RISING
: Age of Monsters is Ragnarok Publication’s flagship product. We wanted to start out by developing a solid relationship with our authors and people who will be purchasing our books. We knew from early on that we wanted to pay our authors pro-rate for the stories and Kickstarter allows us the means of doing just that. Alone it’s unlikely that Tim, Joe, and I could fund a project of this magnitude without going bankrupt. Kickstarter ensures that if people want KAIJU RISING
badly enough, it will get made.
Shawn Speakman: Anything else you want to share about KAIJU RISING?
Nick Sharps: We have a couple BIG things in the works right now – nothing I can really discuss at the moment, other than to say that anyone on the fence about backing the project should keep an eye out for updates. We are humbled by the response and support we have received so far and we’re eager to deliver a quality product to the world. Thanks so much for reading, and thank you Suvudu for hosting this interview.
