Poll: Do You Read Excerpts From Forthcoming Books?

Yesterday, I received A Dance With Dragons by George R. R. Martin.

It was not in hardcover. Or trade paperback. Or eBook. It was the mass market paperback!

A Dance With Dragons is the fifth book in the bestselling epic fantasy series, A Song of Ice & Fire. It is easily the most popular fantasy series being published at the moment, all five books sitting atop bestseller charts all over the world. The series was successful before HBO adapted the first book, A Game of Thrones, but that adaptation vaulted Martin’s work into a whole other level.

When the next book, The Winds of Winter, is published, there will undoubtedly be midnight lines in bookstores akin to what we saw with the Harry Potter books.

I opened my package with the new Dragons paperback and immediately noticed a very cool thing:

The book has a new chapter excerpt from the forthcoming The Winds of Winter!

It is a Ser Barristan Selmy chapter. Right now, there is an excerpt on Martin’s website from the point of view of Arianne. You can read it HERE. And now the Barristan chapter will be published along with the Dragons paperback on October 29, 2013!

I began to read it and then put the excerpt down. I’ve decided to read it later in the year when… the winter is a bit more firmly in place.

It got me thinking though. How many people like reading excerpts? Some people love getting teased. Some people would rather have the entire book before reading even the smallest part of it.

Which are you?
