Dear Readers: A Letter from Joe Abercrombie

From the Desk of Joe Abercrombie

Half a King
Dear Readers,

I wanted to write a book that would deliver a slap in the face with every page, that would appeal not only to my established readers, and to younger readers, but to adult readers put off by the size and complexity of a lot of the epic fantasy that’s out there.  But I also wanted to write a book that was just as challenging and morally complex as anything else I’ve written.  That had the vivid characters, twists and surprises, dark humour and crunching action that adults – of any age – want in their fiction.  Half a King is tighter, faster, and more focused than anything I’ve written before.

Half a King is the story of Yarvi, the second son of the King of Gettland.  Born with a malformed left hand, he’s unable to pull an oar, or draw a bow, or hold a shield, or do any of the things expected of a man in this warrior society.  A shunned embarrassment, he’s been made apprentice to a Minister – a diplomat, healer, and advisor – while his older brother is groomed for the Black Chair.  But when his father and brother are betrayed and murdered, Yarvi is forced to become king himself, and to use the knowledge and cunning he has gained as a Minister against his enemies – enemies outside his country, and enemies within.

I hope you like it.

Happy Reading,

Joe Abercrombie

I just finished reading this on Sunday. It’s just as good as the First Law books, if not better. And the twists at the end surprised me, which is a sign that I’m really invested in the book and willing to let the author take me on the journey rather than trying to figure out what’s going to happen every step of the way.

Since Half a King is marketed as a Young Adult novel, I wonder what the chances of a Newberry Aware are.

I’m eager to read the next in the series.

    Sounds fascinating!
